Interview with Author Summer Lane

How does it feel to publish the 9th installment of the Collapse Series – and your 16th overall?
It feels unreal! When I was a kid, I always pictured myself as an author, sharing my stories with readers, but I admit I didn’t really think that would materialize until I was much older than I am right now. I’ve been really blessed – and I’ve worked really hard!

What’s a typical day in your life like?
I do manage a business, so while I do a lot more than simply write manuscripts, writing certainly is the base of everything that I engage in. I just got a German Shepherd puppy named Kona, and she gets me up early in the morning (earlier than usual, haha!), and I’ll start work then. If I have a good day, I’ll be done with work around 2:30 or 3. If it’s a long day, I’ll be working until 6.

What is State of Hope going to be like – and is it the last book in the series?
State of Hope is going to be long, intense and flushed with adrenaline. There are so many secrets to be revealed, so many character plots to be tied up neatly, and most importantly: Cassidy’s conclusion in this apocalyptic war. While Hope is indeed the final installment in the Collapse Series, it is not the last book in the Collapse universe. I certainly do have some plans for Cassidy in the future – they may not be as huge as Collapse, but trust me: I have plans.

How do you stay motivated and healthy in your career as a writer?
I stay motivated by keeping my eye on the prize: I remove negativity from my life, because nobody needs that. I try to surround myself with people who really care about me and support what I do. Staying healthy, for me, at least, is actually really difficult. My profession requires a lot of sitting, so I have to make an extra effort to get up, walk and move. It’s also tempting to snack on junk food working in an office (am I right?). I try hard to indulge only with healthy snacks: I have celery sticks and apples in the fridge, I like cheese, and any gluten-free cracker in combination. I also just discovered baked parmesan crisps. Oh, my heart!

Advice to aspiring authors?
Don’t let anybody bring you down. Never take no as a final answer. Work hard, and it will pay off, one way or another.

EXCERPT:

They found the forest’s hiking trail moments before breaking the tree line. “Where are we going, Peter?” He was heading toward a mobile home community next to the state park.

He continued to walk with confidence. His usual cocky stride looked surprisingly like the swagger of an ordinary teenage boy. “My friend lives here. Don’t worry. Don’t look like such a stranger here.”

She didn’t want to appear conspicuous, but Gwen was too baffled to help it. The unkempt lawns were boxed in by chain-link fences covered in varying degrees of rust. They passed a lawn littered with bicycles; on the other side of the gravel street, two different cars were parked on the lawn, clearly non-functional. Satellite dishes were on every trailer home. Despite all being painted differently, the track housing still managed to present a uniformity of depressing color.

Multiple houses had motorcycles out front or a dog milling around their yard. When she and Peter passed a pack of Rottweilers, the dogs ran up to the fence and began snarling until all the other dogs in the neighborhood were barking too. “Ignore it,” Peter advised her.

She was scared. This was not the sort of place she ever expected to visit with Peter. She didn’t trust his ability to protect her here. This wasn’t his world, but it wasn’t hers either. They were both out of their element. Peter just didn’t have the sense to realize it.

Winding down the gravel road, Gwen matched Peter’s pace almost step for step. They approached a blue-and-grey house. Like the others, it had wooden latticework around the bottom to help obscure the fact it didn’t have a foundation in the ground. The square house reminded Gwen of how she would take shoeboxes and try to turn them into homes for her dolls by decorating them. It was hard to fathom that she was walking up the plastic steps of the porch to knock on the door.

She waited, feeling her heartbeat in her throat, her toes, and everywhere besides her chest. Even the predictable noise of the door opening startled her.

A woman with a long, black braid and beige cardigan stood in the doorway. Gwen looked up at her, and then watched as the sharp features of her dark face dissolved into unadulterated shock.

“Peter?”

The startled woman ushered them in. She was just as uncomfortable with their presence in the trailer park as Gwen. Once inside, they stood in a living room full of old furniture, facing a kitchen with old electric appliances. There was no unity or romance to the orange recliner, chipped mixing bowl, off-white blender, dull toaster, and sunken couch. It was a bunch of old stuff that looked like it represented several decades of objects abandoned at Goodwill. The chingadera and bric-a-brac wasn’t any more cohesive: porcelain angles, an antique pot, a vase full of bird feathers, and a stopped clock made the place confusing and strange in the same way her grandmother’s house had been.

“What are you doing here?” she hissed, pulling her cardigan close and tossing her thick braid over her shoulder and out of her way. She had a shapeless housedress underneath the beige sweater, and a pair of black leggings insulating her legs as she stomped around, heavy-footed in her leather slippers. She looked comfortable, except for the unexpected guests who were putting her so ill at ease. “You shouldn’t be here.”

“I need your help,” Peter said.

“They’re still keeping tabs on me.”

“That’s why I came in disguise.”

“You’re being irresponsible. You’re jeopardizing us both, and Neverland to boot.”

“I took all the right precautions. This is important.” Hollyhock and Foxglove wrestled their way out of the pixie purse and came twinkling out now that they knew they were safely inside.

“You brought fairies here?” she exclaimed. She leaned down and grabbed a hold of his arm, forcing him to look her dead in her dark eyes. Gwen wanted to leave. This wasn’t a friend, not anymore. This was a grown-up, and unlike Antoine the aviator, she was not amused with Peter’s wartime antics.

“What happens if they figure it out and come to question me?”

Peter scoffed. “You won’t tell them.”

“What if they threaten to arrest me? They could put me away forever until I told them what they needed to know, and nobody here would stop them.”
Peter broke free of her hold with ease; she wasn’t actually trying to restrain him. “Preposterous,” he declared. “If they did that, you would sit, stone-faced and silent in your cell until they all died.”

“What if they beat me?”

“You’d take the blows as though you were made of rock, and you would not speak.” Peter seemed to disregard the question.

“What if they tortured me and stuck blades under my nails?” she demanded.

“Then you would not even scream, but stay silent as a stone!” Peter insisted, hopping up onto a wooden kitchen chair at her dining table, looking down at the woman.

“What if they bring knives and cut off my fingers, one at a time, until I told them how to find you?”

Peter yelled right back, “Then you would steal their knives and scalp them all like the redskin princess you are!”

Her anger slunk off her face and out of her shoulders. She shook her head, frowning as a sad laugh escaped her. She clung to her sweater, blinking back tears, until, at last, she flung her arms around Peter. Still on the chair, he had to bend down to return the embrace.

“Oh, Peter,” she muttered, unaware of the tears slipping off her smiling face. “Oh, Peter.”

“It’s good to see you, Tiger Lily.”

book blurb

Haunted by a photographic memory, I couldn’t escape the worst night of my life.
The blood they shed.
The pain they endured.
The evil that still walked free.
It was all I saw. Those memories, my childhood—the images.

Silenced and scarred.
But nothing lasts forever.
Torment turned to blinding rage. Hate sought revenge, which pursued death.
Then there was life.
The moon.
Rylee Anderson.

I had to choose...

excerpt

Sweat dripped down the side of my face, collecting in the collar of my shirt. The heat was almost unbearable, but I didn’t want to be inside. Mom was away for work again—this time for a full week—and Dad was stuck in front of the television set watching another football game. I hated it when Mom was gone, because my dad didn’t really know how to handle me. He had no problem bonding with my brother, but where I was concerned, he acted completely clueless. So Sundays became the day I’d take a book and sit in the back yard beneath a tree.

I brought my water bottle to my lips when something caught my attention near the privacy fence, separating the houses in the neighborhood and the wooded area behind it. It ran up the side yard, offering us seclusion to the house next door. The young woman who lived there often had guests over, which made my parents uneasy. But now, someone was in her back yard, climbing her fence.

No…not just someone.

A boy.

His stick-straight hair, the color of sand, hung to the middle of his ears. But I couldn’t see his face. He had his back to me as he climbed, just before jumping over to the side filled with trees. His black T-shirt was a blur. He was there one second and gone the next.

I stared at the barrier, wondering if I could climb over and follow him. I knew everyone in the neighborhood, but I’d never seen him before. I glanced over my shoulder and waited a moment, just to make sure my dad or my brother weren’t on their way out. When I noticed no movement beyond the sliding glass door, I jumped up and ran as fast as I could. Without second guessing it, I began to scale the tall slats of the wood.

Once I made it to the top, I looked down and realized it was much higher on the other side. I’d never been in the wooded area before, and for a second, I contemplated just going back to my yard. I thought about my book I’d left beneath the tree and my father who might’ve gone looking for me. But then I remembered the boy—and I so desperately wanted to find out where he came from.

Curiosity got the best of me.

I swung my leg over and, with the pace of a sloth, I used the wood between the slats to lower myself to the ground. Standing on my feet again, I searched through the trees, hoping to spot the boy with blond hair and a black shirt.

But he was nowhere.

I carefully walked farther into the trees on the soft dirt, keeping as quiet as possible. I didn’t want to venture too far, because I worried I wouldn’t be able to make it back to my house. From this side, I couldn’t tell which house was which. So I made sure not to deviate too far from behind my back yard.

It felt like an hour, but realistically, it was probably closer to five minutes before I decided to give up. I thought it might’ve been better to have just waited until he came back. I turned around, ready to head home, when I spotted him.

Or…he spotted me.

book blurb

Two bestselling novels at one low price!

XO, Blake: New Yorker Blake Morgan is gay, handsome, and kinky as f*ck. In this duet, you’ll join him on a naughty new adult adventure where he wakes up in a man's bed he’s been lusting after for as long as he can remember.

Unsaid: Lower East Side multimedia artist extraordinaire Miguel Santana may be known as the cocky Latin stud in the city, but all he’s wanted since college was Blake’s hand in marriage. He was livid when Blake walked down the aisle with the wrong guy. Miguel has his own list titled the Seven Needs, which are quite contrary to Blake’s dirty-boy deeds. They involve serious commitments, which may leave his new-to-the-singles-scene buddy sprinting for the door, destroying any hopes Miguel has for happiness.

excerpt

Blake looked up, not quite forgetting his friend’s beauty. His black pearl eyes raked over him, full lips and dimples received the gesture.

“Has anyone ever told you that you are the spitting image of Mario Lopez?”

“From Extra TV??”

“Ah-huh.” He always appreciated his friend’s sex appeal, but he’d never noticed how gentle and caring he was until that moment. He could be super sweet.

“Every day,” Miguel returned, the smile accentuating his dimples to further resemble the TV actor. He handed him a toothbrush topped with paste and instructed, “Brush.”

Scrubbing the toothbrush in his mouth, he cleaned over his top and bottom teeth, then his tongue back and forth, spat on the shower floor next to their feet, and rinsed his mouth in the shower.

A creamy shampoo was applied to his curls while standing under the showerhead. With a bristle brush, Miguel scrubbed his shoulders and back counterclockwise, followed by his chest, arms, legs, and feet clockwise.

He’d never had anyone wash his hair except at the salon. Overwhelmed by how the simplest gesture made him feel, he closed his eyes and tried to stand tall. In silence, he observed their closeness. You…treat me as a gift. Make me feel special.

This shower brought the intimacy between them to a newfound intensity.

Reaching down, Miguel grabbed him close, groin-to-groin. Their two cocks touched. “We’re about the same size.”

“Not quite,” he corrected, believing Miguel to be bigger. He wasn’t sure why, but he’d always felt so much smaller around him. Maybe it was his dominant personality, his confidence.

Miguel held onto his cock and rubbed his palm over the tip. He then circled his hand over his own. His dimpled grin increased.

He squirmed but stood his ground, looking his friend deep in his molten eyes. He wasn’t backing down. Not then.

The challenge must’ve motivated what came next for Miguel reached behind him and grabbed his ass.

His mouth leaned up to Blake’s right ear. “Tonight, I’m going to fist you. I want your ass clean.” He buried two fingers inside him.

“Mig!” He loved this.

“Understand?”

“Yes.” He was tempted to say, No. No way in Hell, but his friend seemed intent on fisting. He’d brought it up a few times. Who knew, he enjoyed his face fucking and golden shower, so maybe the pleasures would continue. “This morning was the hottest thing ever.”

“I’m glad you’re enjoying yourself.” After grabbing the shave cream canister, Miguel lathered his scruff.

“I am, very much so.”

Miguel popped off a new disposable razor lid from the shower caddy. Starting with Blake’s right cheek, he glided the blade down, top to bottom and said, “Such a pretty face, for a man.” He studied his eyes for confirmation.

“Oh, please…” He looked away knowing he wasn’t one for compliments, especially about his face.

“Why do you dismiss what I say?” With an owner’s grip, he turned his chin and shaved his upper neck.

“I wasn’t raised placing an emphasis on looks.” He felt the shower’s heat steal into his pores. It was hard to listen to the compliments. Ever since that plane crash, back in college, he never thought of himself as attractive.

“You’d never know with the way you carry yourself.”

“What do you mean?” He drew his upper lip down, enabling Miguel to shave under his nostrils.

“You take pride in the way you dress, the clothes, fit body, perfect teeth¾”

“Thanks. I work in advertising. It’s my job to look good.”

“It shows.”

Miguel pressed his lips against his mouth. He slid his tongue into his mouth and kissed him deeply, pulling his body in tight. The shave foam residue lubed their lips. Blake’s backside rested against the tile wall, his torso buried deep in his friend’s embrace.

“Why do you look away when I compliment you? Do I make you uncomfortable talking about how attractive you are?”

“No. I, ahhh…” God, how would he answer that? He tried to smile. “Mig, no one’s ever said that to me before is all.”

“Well, it’s true. You’re the most attractive guy I’ve ever met.” Dropping the razor onto the ledge, he wrapped his arms around him.

With relentless enjoyment, he pressed into Miguel’s rock-hard body. “Thank you.” He saw acceptance in his friend’s eyes. He’d never noticed it until then. Had he always looked at him that way and he’d just not seen it before?

The shower suddenly felt too small. He could barely breathe. “I better get dressed. I have some errands to run before work.”

Miguel squirted shampoo onto his own hair as he stepped out and toweled off.

“Blake…”

“Yeah?”
