Sergeant Logan Pierce is the leader of Houston’s elite SWAT team. On the force, he’s the best at what he does. In private, the most important thing in his life is taking care of his submissive, Clay. Clay is his whole world, and Logan will do whatever is necessary to keep him safe. Even if that means going up against Clay’s stubbornness in order to help him heal.

Can Logan and Clay work together to rebuild their happiness? Can they find their way back to the shared passion of Dominance and submission? Or will their love and relationship end before it’s truly begun?

excerpt

Clay lay on the couch, his feet in Logan’s lap. It was a comfortable night. They’d just returned from dinner out with their co-worker, Q, and his wife, Cassie. Q had been a little quiet, but it had been nice to have dinner with the couple. Now they were relaxing before bed. The TV was on, but Clay wasn’t paying any attention to it. Instead, he focused on Logan, who absently rubbed Clay’s foot while they watched the ten o’clock news. He looked good as always, dressed in a lightweight, chocolate-brown sweater that complemented his dark blond hair and hazel eyes. His face was clean-shaven, his jawline hard. Logan looked exactly like what he was—a regimented and in control SWAT team sergeant for the Houston Police Department. When a commercial came on, Clay spoke up. “It’s good to be back home.”

Logan looked down at him with an eyebrow raised. “Home?”

Clay snorted a laugh. As usual, they were at Logan’s house. When he thought about it, he realized he hadn’t been back to his apartment in weeks. In fact, his bags from their recent trip to Colorado were here at Logan’s. He hadn’t bothered to take them back to his place after their return.

“If I’m in your space too much, I can throw all my stuff in the car and head back to my apartment,” he said as he pretended to pull away.

Logan tightened his grip on his foot. “You’re not going anywhere.”

Clay bit his lip to hold back a grin. “I didn’t think you wanted me to. But what I meant is, I feel good about life. That trip was awesome. I got to play in the snow, just like I wanted.”

“And I got to warm you up when you were done.”

“You did a very good job. You might have gotten me a little overheated a few times,” he teased. He wiggled his toes as Logan squeezed his foot again. “You and I are in a great place. And I think things are going to be better at work now too. We redid Hayden’s ridiculous course and passed with flying colors this time.”

“And you didn’t have any fights with Ryan afterward,” Logan said with a smile.

Clay rolled his eyes. “Ryan is cool people now. He wasn’t cool then.”

Logan gave him an admonishing look. “Still, you shouldn’t have started that fight. You knew better.”

“I know. But he pissed me off. And maybe it was good that we had that fight to get all of the animosity out of our systems.”

“Hmm. Maybe.”

“Anyway. I’m hoping the fact that we passed the redo means Hayden will get off our backs and quit fucking with our schedule.”

This time it was Logan who snorted a laugh, but he didn’t otherwise answer. Clay didn’t really expect him to. He was vocal in his dislike of their captain, but Logan wasn’t one to show disrespect for a superior. Hayden had been doing everything he could to piss them off the past couple of months. He hadn’t come out and said it, but Clay figured it was because he and Logan were out and a couple. The captain hadn’t had such a hard-on for making things difficult for their team before their announcement.

“So, you’re good with Ryan. The team is gelling again. And we’re hoping Hayden will finally move on and give up on his pet project of tormenting our team. Anything else?”

Clay shifted, looking at the TV instead of Logan. “What else is there?”

“Are you still blaming yourself for that idiot making those fake calls to our team?”

Clay pulled his feet off Logan’s lap for real this time and got up from the couch. “Why wouldn’t I blame myself? It was my fault.”

“It wasn’t your fault. And I don’t like hearing you say that it was.”

“C’mon, Sarge. You know that was on me.” Clay roughly ran a hand through his hair, turning his back on his lover. “If I hadn’t gone to that convention and went on camera bragging about how badass our team was, that whacko would have never taken it as a challenge to try and prove he was better than us.” He turned back around as Logan grabbed his hand and pulled him to stand in between his legs.

“Maybe not. But maybe he would have taken his anger out in another way.”

“What do you mean?”

“You read the report Roberts put together on the guy. He was looking for revenge because he felt he’d been slighted too many times. What if he’d decided to go on a shooting rampage at IR Media Gaming’s headquarters? What if he’d physically attacked the people he wanted revenge against? That teacher, the store manager, or your friend Ian? Someone or several someones could have been hurt. At least with the revenge tactics he chose, no one was. We managed to catch the idiot, and hopefully he’ll be granted some time to think about what he did.”

“Are you forgetting he tried to kill me?” Clay saw a muscle tic in Logan’s jaw at the question, his hazel eyes going hard before he answered.

“No, I’m not forgetting.”

Clay tilted his head to the side as he studied his lover. “You know, I noticed that the perp seemed a little worse for wear before you got him loaded in the patrol car.” Along with Ryan, Clay had been the last to leave the guy’s apartment. By the time he’d made it outside and down the stairs, he’d noticed Carlos, Logan’s best friend, standing at the corner of the building, looking like he was keeping watch. A few moments later, Logan had led the man from around the side of the apartment building. He hadn’t had any marks on him, but he’d been bent over, coughing as Logan walked him to the squad car. “Did you do anything to cause that?”

“I’ll never let anyone hurt you.”

Logan’s response was a non-answer, but it confirmed Clay’s suspicions. “I’m a cop. On occasion, I might get hurt. And you can’t go after people because of that.”

“And you’re mine. Did you forget that?”

Clay shook his head. “No, Sir.”

“Come here.” Clay followed the gentle pull Logan gave his hand to drop down to the couch and straddle his lap.

“You’re my lover. My submissive. It’s my right and my pleasure to protect you, always.” He brought a hand up, his thumb sliding across the metal collar that circled Clay’s neck. “I won’t let anything or anyone hurt you or take you away from me.”

A thrill shot through Clay at that declaration. Logan’s unapologetic possessiveness had caused problems early on in their relationship, but they’d worked on it and come to an understanding on boundaries. Now, he was able to revel in Logan’s possessiveness and caring, because he knew it wouldn’t get out of hand. Clay pressed his forehead to Logan’s and closed his eyes. “I love when you talk to me like that.”

Logan’s hand moved to grip the back of his neck. “Do you?”

His eyes still closed, Clay nodded.

“Tell me why.”

“Because it makes me feel like the most important thing in your world. I’ve never felt like that with anyone.”

“It’s true. You are the most important thing to me. Having you in my life, wearing my collar, means everything to me.”

Clay opened his eyes and looked into his lover’s gaze, seeing the sincerity there. Not that he doubted him. Logan had proven time and time again how much he loved him. “I don’t deserve you, Sir. And I don’t do enough to show you how much I love you in return.”

“You don’t have to do anything to deserve me. I’m with you because I don’t ever want to be with anyone else.”

“Well, maybe I can show you what I feel tonight. Physically.” He brought a hand up to rub the pad of muscle on Logan’s chest. “Let me serve you, Sir.”

Origins of Benjamin Hackett

The Origins of Benjamin Hackett
by Gerald M. O'Connor
Genre: Coming Of Age

All families have secrets. Most go untold…

In the summer of ‘96, Benjamin Hackett has come of age, technically. And in the midst of the celebratory hangover, his world is whipped out from under his feet. His parents have finally shared their lifelong secret with him; he’s adopted.

At the age of 18, the boy still has some growing up to do, and with the help of JJ, his loquacious consigliore and bodyguard, he embarks on an adventure that’ll put to bed a lifetime of lies.

Over the course of five days, they find themselves caught up in the darker side of Cork. But when they sweep through the misfits blocking their way and finally discover the truth of it…now that’s the greatest shock of all.

The Origins of Benjamin Hackett is a tender tale of heartache and displacement told through a wry and courageous voice. Set in Ireland, it’s a timely reminder that the world hasn’t moved on just as fast as we fancy. Now, in this emotionally charged story, Gerald M. O’Connor explores conditioned guilt and its consequences in a country still hiding from the sins of its past.

O’Connor’s book draws on a time when the Catholic Church in Ireland would quietly take children from mothers in convents and Magdalene Laundries and deposit them into new homes, making it nearly impossible for these kids to find their real parents. Attempts by children to find their birth parents were often blocked by a dark web of secrecy and bureaucracy that, in many ways, still continues to haunt the country today.

Brimming with unfathomable escapades, a motley crew of characters and a healthy serving of Irish humor, O’Connor’s book is steeped in Irish culture told in the inimitable Corkman’s brogue. Set in a time before the chaos of modern digital culture, The Origins of Benjamin Hackett takes a step back, allowing space for readers to escape and think about the realities of growing up in a family founded on a lie. In his stylish debut, O’Connor shows an amazing ability to paint heartbreak and longing that will keep readers thinking about The Origins of Benjamin Hackett long after they finish the story.

Advance Praise For
The Origins of Benjamin Hackett

“‘The Origins of Benjamin Hackett’ by Gerald O'Connor is a raucous and riotous coming-of-age story that is brutal, tender and hilarious.”
– Paul D. Brazill, author of A Case of Noir and Guns of Brixton
“O’Connor doles out killer dialogue that adds oodles of character to this hero’s journey. Told with the lilt and panache of Joseph O’Connor and Dermot Bolger in their novels of the ‘90s, Gerald O’Connor is the new and improved voice we've been waiting for.”
– Gerard Brennan, author of Undercover and Wee Rockets
“Visceral writing that inherits a long Irish tradition. O’Connor’s narrative contains sharp characterization, and has an assured voice, while dramatizing conditioned guilt with humor and style.”
– Richard Godwin, author of Apostle Rising, Mr. Glamour, One Lost Summer and others

“If you’re expecting the usual coming-of-age tale, you’re in for a big shock. This is a tale big on heart and one which the author, Gerald O’Connor, has hied religiously to the advice of Harry Crews for writers, to ‘leave out the parts readers skip.’ None of those parts remain in these pages. An auspicious debut!”
– Les Edgerton, author of The Death of Tarpons, The Bitch, The Genuine, Imitation, Plastic Kidnapping, Bomb and others

Blurb:
A simple mistake brings the world to its knees with no notice or time to prepare. Young and inexperienced, first term president Baron York will have a lot to answer for when it's finally done. If, that is, there's anyone left to answer to.
Lessons from The Great Depression make an encore performance at the Hamilton property as they try to stay alive...and sane. Where were you when the world went dark and everything stopped?

Excerpt:
I wanted to be pissed off, that once again, I was going to be doing the lifting part, but judging by Christian’s demeanor, after his catatonic display, I kept my opinion to myself. After he was in the house and the door closed I spun on Barney. I should’ve been more careful, but my second thoughts were too late as I accused, “What the hell happened this morning?”
Barney’s single finger flashed up, and his face brooked no attitude. “Take it down a notch young lady, and I will explain.”
I paced away and back several times before I had myself under control. Nodding, I acquiesced. “Okay.”
Barney heaved a heavy sigh as he leaned on the trunk. His arms folded up at the elbows and his hands roughed his beard. “There weren’t as many people this morning as there were last night, but the people this morning didn’t have their act together. It was mass chaos everywhere we went. Getting in and getting out was an exercise in navigating a stampede. People were pushing, shoving, fighting, and there were enough weapons around to arm a small militia. Very few had vehicles that were functioning. I had challenges navigating the crowd that swarmed the car. More than one tried, but failed,” he gave me a look that clearly relayed the severity of the situation, “to take possession of the car. At one point, while Christian was still in it.”

A lifelong lover of words and reading, Savannah Verte hasn’t quite figured out what she wants to write when she grows up. Born and raised in the upper Midwest, Savannah’s gypsy spirit and never quit attitude keep her busy and seldom idle. For so many reasons, Savannah considers herself a ‘Contemporary Vagabond’ when it comes to writing and hopes that others find her diverse offerings as enjoyable to read as they are to write.

Her first release in decades, Viva Zapata & the Magic 8-Ball began the journey August 1, 2015. Her short story, What they didn’t know, was featured in the January/February BTS magazine, and she co-authored a paranormal piece, Kingdoms Fall, which came out in early 2016. Her next two solo ventures, the first two books in The Custos series -Book of Time & Book of Change also released in 2016. After that, she’ll be working on her competition piece, Chasing Daylight for Cherry Adair’s Finish the Damn Book Challenge, she has an upcoming anthology work called Immortal Alchemy, and an untitled short story for a charity anthology that is a TBA release. There is a long list of titles to come after those are done too.

As the primary owner and driving force behind Eclectic Bard Books she considers herself immensely fortunate to see writing from varied perspectives as she endeavors to publish the authors rostered there. Working with other writers, Savannah gets to expand her horizons every day as someone brings a new idea to the table and the brainstorming begins. There is something addictive about the creative process for her and helping other authors embrace their dreams make hers a reality daily.

That’s the official Savannah, the unofficial version is just a girl who loves experiencing life with every twist and turn it takes. When she was born, she had such fine, light hair that her mother used to tape bows to her head so people would know she was a girl. She’s had a host of crazy unrelated jobs- everything from cake decorator, dry cleaner, and insurance agent to Emergency Room assistant, bartender, crime lab tech and bouncer. Savannah loves air hockey but completely sucks at it. She loves good jazz, good scotch, and antiques but also old rock, a quiet tea, and a tidy home. She’s completely technology impaired and can get it after she’s broken the computer or done it ass-backwards a few times… Thank Gods that there are some amazing meme creators that let her pilfer images or she’d be lost. Lime green is her color, the rhinoceros is her logo & philosophy, and she’s completely mad about seeing new authors try.

Ascenders Saga by C.L. Gaber

Title: Ascenders Saga
Author: CL Gaber | @CLGaber

Ascenders: High School for the Recently Departed (Ascenders #1)

Is this Hell or is this High School?

THE ASCENDERS Book Saga Takes You to the In-between Where Teens Who Died Young Go On the Epic Adventure of an After-Lifetime

Walker Callaghan doesn't know what happened to her. One minute she was living her teenage life in suburban Chicago...and the next minute, she was in a strange place and in a brand new school with absolutely no homework, no rules, and no consequences.

Walker Callaghan, 17, is dead.

She doesn't go to heaven or hell. She lands at The Academy, a middle realm where teenagers have one thing in common: They were the morning announcement at their high schools because they died young.

These high school kids are now caught in a strange “in-between” zone where life hasn’t changed very much.  In fact, this special teen limbo looks a lot like life in a quaint Michigan town complete with jocks, popular girls and cliques. "There are even cheerleaders in death," Walker observes.  It's not a coincidence that the music teacher is a guy named Kurt who "used to have this band." The drama teacher, Heath, is crush worthy because back in his life, he starred in some superhero movie.

Principal King explains the rules -- there are none. Why? You can't die twice.

There is no homework.
No tests.
No SATS.

You're just there to learn because the human brain isn't fully formed until you're 24.

By the way, you can't get hurt physically, so race your Harley off that hillside. But falling in love is the most dangerous thing you can do ...because no one knows how long you'll stay in this realm or what's next.

"Losing someone you love would be like dying twice," Walker says.

Walker Callaghan has just arrived at the Academy after a tragic car accident. “Is this hell or is this high school?” she asks.

She finds out her new life is a bit of both as she falls in love with tat-covered, bad boy Daniel Reid who is about to break the only sacred rule of this place. He's looking for a portal to return back to the living realm.

He needs just one hour to retrieve his younger brother who strangely never arrived at The Academy. Bobby is an Earth Bound Spirit, stuck at a plane crash site that took both of their lives as their rich father piloted his private jet nose-first into a cornfield on Christmas Eve.

Walker loves Daniel and risks it all to go with him.

Have they learned enough to outsmart dangerous forces while transporting a young child with them? Can their love survive the fragmented evil parts of themselves that are now hunting them down as they try to find a way back to the middle?

At the Academy, you learn the lessons of an after-lifetime.

Ascenders: Skypunch (Book Two)

In the Midst—a place for those who die young—there are no rules except one.

And Walker Callaghan, dead at seventeen, just broke it. She briefly revisited her earthly life
and the punishment is eternal. Longing for her rebel love interest, Daniel Reid, Walker finds an ally in Cass, whose attraction to her is as alive as he is. “Life is short,” he tells her. “I’m banking on eternity. With you.”

In the second book of the Ascenders Saga, a realm-jumping journey takes Walker and Daniel back to life again when they search for something buried in history. They team with students from several other schools in the middle realm including a place for teens born with oddities. It’s home to the Claires . . . beautiful, ruthless, and quite dead seventeen-year-old quads who each have a different clairvoyant gift.

Can Walker survive another adventure of an afterlife-time—or will she find herself on the downside of eternity?

Now that it was absolutely dark, I felt like the world had faded to inky black. I
didn’t have any idea where we were walking, but knew I had to get home before my
mother became frantic and called the cops, which would be mortifying in a new town.

“So, how long have your parents been gone?” I asked, sliding along and breathing
not-so-heavily, while thinking that maybe his mother and father had a time-share in
Miami or Palm Springs during this time of the year and had just snuck away for the
weekend or even dumped the kids on him for a week.

“How long have they been gone?” Daniel pondered out loud. His laugh was
beyond sarcastic; it was vicious. “They’ve been gone years, months, and days. Who cares
about them? I certainly don’t.”

Of course, he was kidding. Parents didn’t take vacations from their four children
for years. It was called child abandonment and there were laws. Wait, maybe his parents
were in jail for breaking the law. Embezzlers? Ponzi scheme? My journalistic mind was
in overdrive. “So, it’s just the four of you kids in the house? For years. Home alone.” I
said with a little laugh. “Obviously, that was a bad joke.”

“No joke. It’s just us four—we’re a family. Intact. For the most part,” said the
David Beckham look-a-like with the short dark hair and steel gray eyes, quickly walking
ahead again. He really didn’t want to get into it now.

Intact? I thought. Now this was really getting interesting. I knew he was the
exacting type, and his choice of words was deliberate.

My next question would have to wait.

In what seemed like an instant, my back foot caught on a large fallen tree branch
and I fell forward with all my body weight. Crashing hard onto my hands and knees, I
cried out, but I wasn’t in any real pain. Before I could stand up, I slipped again until my
stomach slammed against the surface of the thickly iced-over pond. The cracking sound
was like thunder. Then, in what felt like a sickening surge of broken glass and rushing
water, the ground suddenly ceased to exist. I didn’t have time to scream as I dropped into
the dark, lifeless, icy chill of wintery water.

I braced for the first slap of bitter freeze, instantly calling up some stupid fact
from science class at Kennedy High where we learned that Titanic survivors described
hitting the freezing ocean water as thousands of tiny knives stabbing every inch of their
bodies.

I expected excruciating pain, but there was none. There was just numbness as I
entered the earliest stages of being converted to ice.

Resistance was only natural and I fought hard as my hands flailed through the
water trying to keep my head above the murky freeze, but it was pointless. The water was
hungry that night and my thrashing almost made a game out of its impending conquest. It
only took a second or two of my desperate survival dance for the lake to swallow me
whole.

Daniel must have heard the crack and he stopped in place. Slowly, he turned
around as I struggled to pop up again, but by putting up a fight I only succeeded in
making it worse. As my body was being carried under the heavy sheet of ice in an
involuntary dance, I could see Daniel above, the soles of his black boots carefully
following my route as he calmly watched me drown.

In a way, it was fascinating to watch him ever so gradually shuffle along as my
hands desperately reached from under my new icy roof for the bottom of his boots. The
only thing that separated us was about five solid inches of deadly winter soup. By the
time he found me in an even darker spot where the lake mingled with several dead,
embalmed trees, all he could see from under the thick coating was my face looking up at
him, frozen in horror. He saw my pouty mouth almost kissing the ice and frantically
trying to say one word to him.

“Help!” I mouthed.

I gulped down murky green water, ingesting long tentacles of lifeless leaves and
thick clumps of sludge-dirt, and it all slid easily into my lungs while he just stood there.

He. Stood. There.

Frantically, I maneuvered away from the spot by the trees, which made it worse
because now I was pinned under even thicker ice, my milky-white face pressed up

against eight to ten inches of immovable crystals.

Casually, Daniel walked to where I was wildly waving my arms underneath the
water. When I looked up now, he was a hazy dark blur that made me suddenly dizzy.
That’s when I shut my eyes to wait for the inevitable.

But I didn’t black out. Long minutes passed, my eyes sprung open, and I
continued to push upward again as the water became midnight black. For some reason I
was still alive, but I still couldn’t free myself from this wintry prison.

My mind raced. How much time had passed? How much time could pass before I
would be brain-dead? How much time before I died?

Daniel still stood above the ground and calmly watched me struggle. “To hell
with this,” he finally said, loud enough for me to hear him under the ice. Was he telling
me to stop struggling and just accept that I lost?

After another endless minute passed, he shook his head and, though apparently
talking to himself, said even louder, “Okay, enough . . . but you need to know.”

Kicking through a thinner spot of ice, he made a small hole and then pummeled it
into a bigger passage with those clomping boots. Reaching down into the crack, he
offered me a strong hand and a tat-covered, muscular arm. Somehow through the dark
water, I saw human fingers moving and grabbed them like they were my only lifelines,
which is exactly what they were to me.

All it took was one big hoist and I was in his arms, pressed body-to-body up
against him, soaking wet, freezing cold, and mad as hell.

With my right hand, that had absolutely no feeling in it, I slapped him squarely
across the jaw as hard as possible. When he didn’t budge much, I slapped him again,
which made my hand tired, but it didn’t hurt. When I attempted to punch his face, he
grabbed my hand in a firm way that signaled we weren’t going another nine rounds.

“Easy there, tiger,” he said with a smirk that made those soft eyes twinkle. “I
guess you’re a fan of the Rocky movies.”

“Why . . . you bastard . . . why . . . you didn’t even try to save me,” I sputtered,
but I wasn’t really coughing and certainly my brain was perfectly fine. For a split second,
I counted to five backward. Again, it was amazing that my mind was still functioning.

Maybe the water was cold enough to save me. Is that how it worked?

“I saw you. You were just standing there! Watching! Watching me die!” I
screamed, shoving him again. This time, I took him by surprise and he landed butt-first in

a pile of snow.

Calmly, he stood up, lurched forward, and grabbed both of my arms, holding me
against his rock-hard chest until I stopped struggling and gave up the idea of trying to
knock his block off. He held me tightly like he was protecting me from some danger
worse than what just happened. Tears formed in my eyes and I began to touch my arms
and then tested my breathing, which was perfectly normal. He still refused to let go. Big
white puffs of my breath filled the dark sky and I watched them evaporate slowly like
little clouds. Then I looked up.

“Why aren’t I dead?” I said in an anguished voice.

Daniel took a deep breath, carefully released me, and then answered slowly.

“Because, baby, you can’t die twice,” he said.
